Pixelate Faces for News and Documentary Work

Pixelation is the visual shorthand for redacted identity. Drop the photo, draw pixelate boxes over each face, and download a copy that signals anonymisation more clearly than blur alone.

Newsrooms use it for source protection, social workers for case studies, and educators for teaching materials that reuse sensitive imagery.

Why Use Our Face Pixelate Tool?

Auto Face Detection

Click Auto-Find Faces to automatically detect and pixelate every face in the photo using the detection engine face detection library. The tool scans the image in the browser and adds pixelate zones over each detected face without any server processing or API calls.

Manual Draw Zones

Draw pixelate zones manually by dragging anywhere on the image. Each zone is independently resizable, drag the corner handles to adjust size, drag the body to reposition, and click the red × button to remove. You can have as many zones as you need on one image.

Adjustable Pixel Size

Drag the Pixel Size slider to control how large the mosaic blocks are, from fine 1px detail to heavy 100px blocks. The effect updates live on the canvas as you drag. Switch between Pixelate and Blur effects at any time. Rectangle and Ellipse shapes both supported.

Private, No Upload

Everything runs entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image is never sent to any server, never stored, and never processed outside your device. The download button saves the finished image directly from the canvas to your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pixelating and censoring faces online.

Does the pixelate tool upload my photo to a server?
No. The entire tool runs in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API and the detection engine library. Your image is loaded into a canvas element on your device and never transmitted to any server. The downloaded file is generated locally from the canvas and saved directly to your device.
What is the difference between pixelate and blur?
Pixelate divides the area into large visible square blocks, creating a classic mosaic or censored-video effect. Blur applies a smooth Gaussian blur using the CSS filter API, giving a soft cloud-like appearance. Both effectively hide the underlying detail, pixelate gives a harder, more stylised look while blur is more natural.
Why did Auto-Find Faces not detect any faces?
Face detection uses the detection engine library which works best on frontal faces that are clear and reasonably large in the image. It may miss faces that are very small, turned sideways, partially obscured, or in low contrast lighting. If auto detection fails, draw pixelate zones manually by dragging on the image.
Can I use this tool to censor text or licence plates?
Yes. The manual draw mode lets you place pixelate zones anywhere on the image, not just over faces. Cover licence plates, street addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, or any other sensitive text. Draw as many zones as you need, resize them with the corner handles, and adjust the pixel size slider for the desired level of obscuring.
