Round Profile Photos With Transparent Backgrounds

Most profile pictures are stored square, then visually masked into a circle. The circle crop bakes the round shape into the file with a transparent background, so the avatar looks right on any surface.

Useful for team photos, podcast guest avatars, and any place where a square upload would otherwise leave white corners.

Why Use Our Circle Crop Tool?

Perfect Circular Crop

The crop area is locked to a 1:1 square aspect ratio with a circular overlay applied via CSS, so what you see is exactly what you get. The output canvas uses the HTML5 arc and clip APIs to mask the cropped area into a true circle, no jagged edges, no JPEG halos, just a clean rounded boundary.

Choose Output Size

Pick from popular avatar sizes, 128, 256, 400, 512 (default), 1024, or 2048 pixels, or keep the original size of your crop selection. The image is resampled by the canvas at the chosen output size for a sharp, ready-to-use profile picture or app icon at standard avatar dimensions.

Transparent or Solid Background

Choose Transparent (default) for a PNG with a clear background outside the circle, perfect for layering over other designs. Or pick Solid color and use the color picker to fill the circle exterior with any hex color. Both options always produce a true round image with smooth alpha edges.

Private, No Upload

Your image never leaves your device. cropper runs the visual cropper in your browser, and the circular clip is applied via the HTML5 Canvas API, also locally. No file is sent to a server, no account is needed, and nothing is stored. The downloaded PNG is generated locally and saved directly to your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about circle cropping images online.

Why does the download have to be PNG?
PNG is the only widely supported lossless format that preserves transparency. JPG cannot store transparent pixels, it would replace the area outside the circle with white or another solid color, which defeats the point of a circular crop. If you only need a circular image with a solid background, you can pick the Solid color option and convert the resulting PNG to JPG separately.
What output size should I choose for a profile picture?
Most platforms accept 256-1024 px square images for profile pictures. 512 × 512 (the default here) is a great all-rounder, large enough to look sharp on Retina displays without being unnecessarily heavy. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord all use 256-640 px. LinkedIn and Twitter both happily accept up to 1024 × 1024.
Can I rotate the image before cropping?
Yes. Use the rotate-left and rotate-right tool buttons in the sidebar to rotate the underlying image in 90° steps. The crop circle stays put while the image rotates beneath it, letting you straighten or reorient your photo before locking in the final crop. Reset clears any rotation and returns to the original orientation.
Does the tool upload my image to a server?
No. cropper and the canvas circle-clip both run entirely in your browser. Your image is loaded into a canvas element on your device and never transmitted to any server. The downloaded PNG file is generated locally and saved directly to your device.
