Know Your EMI Before You Take The Loan

EMI stands for equated monthly installment, the fixed amount you pay the lender every month until the loan is cleared. Each payment covers a little interest and a little of the principal. Early on most of it is interest, and near the end most of it is principal. Knowing the EMI up front tells you whether the loan fits your monthly budget before you sign anything.

This calculator uses the standard EMI formula, so the number matches what a bank would quote. You set three things: the loan amount, the annual interest rate, and the tenure. It then shows the monthly EMI, the total interest you will pay over the life of the loan, and the total amount you hand over in the end. The chart and the year-by-year table make it easy to see how much the interest really adds up to.

Try a few combinations. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total interest, while a shorter one does the opposite. Because it all runs in your browser, you can compare loans as many times as you like, and none of your figures are uploaded anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about calculating your EMI.

How is EMI calculated?
EMI is worked out with the formula EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n divided by ((1 + r)^n - 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12 and by 100), and n is the number of months. This tool applies that formula, so the result matches a bank quote.
What is a good loan tenure?
A longer tenure lowers your monthly EMI but increases the total interest you pay, while a shorter tenure raises the EMI and cuts the total interest. Pick the shortest tenure whose EMI still fits your monthly budget comfortably, so you pay less interest overall.
Does a higher interest rate change my EMI a lot?
Yes. Because interest compounds over the whole tenure, even a small change in the rate can move the EMI and the total interest noticeably, especially on large or long loans. Try nudging the rate slider to see the effect on your own figures.
Can I use this for a home, car, or personal loan?
Yes. The EMI formula is the same for home loans, car loans, personal loans, and education loans. Just enter the amount, the annual rate, and the tenure for your loan, and the calculator gives you the EMI and the total cost.
What is the difference between principal and interest?
Principal is the money you actually borrowed, and interest is the extra you pay the lender for the loan. Your EMI covers both. The chart and the year-by-year table on this page show how the split shifts from mostly interest at the start to mostly principal near the end.
Is my loan information uploaded anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, so the amounts and rates you enter are never uploaded, logged, or stored. It is free to use with no signup and no limit on how many calculations you make.
