Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about finding sitemaps online.

What is a sitemap?
A sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs on a website to help search engines crawl and index the site more efficiently. Most websites have one at /sitemap.xml.
What paths does this tool check?
The tool first reads robots.txt for Sitemap directives, then checks /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, /wp-sitemap.xml, and /sitemap.php as fallbacks.
What does the Entries column show?
For URL Set sitemaps, it shows the number of page URLs. For Sitemap Index files, it shows the number of child sitemaps. For Text sitemaps, it shows the number of lines.
Why does a sitemap show as Error?
Error means the sitemap URL was discovered but could not be fetched. This can happen if the server blocks external requests, the sitemap requires authentication, or the URL no longer exists.
